Starting out in high school as a Sports Writer for his hometown newspaper, the Midland Daily News, in Midland, Michigan, and later applying his craft as a Staff Writer for the Michigan Daily newspaper at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Jim Shahin laid the foundations for his career as a reporter and journalist. Upon graduation from the University of Michigan in December 1976 with a Bachelor’s degree in English and a teaching certificate, Jim Shahin entered the competitive world of professional journalism.

As a resident of Austin, Texas, Jim Shahin landed a position as a Staff Reporter with the Austin American-Statesman in January 1980. The alternative weekly Austin Chronicle took notice of his work and recruited Jim Shahin to serve as Politics Editor in April 1984. As the first politics editor at The Austin Chronicle, Jim Shahin directed the paper's political coverage while writing a column, reporting stories, and overseeing a growing cadre of freelancers.

Jim Shahin went on to take a position as Senior Editor at American Way Magazine in February 1988. Handling a different set of tasks and responsibilities required by the bi-weekly, global-reach in-flight periodical, Jim Shahin worked with freelancers and staff writers to help create a distinguished travel magazine that included contributions from such luminaries as John Updike, Paul Theroux, Calvin Trillin, Ray Bradbury, among others. With Jim Shahin helping to steer its course, the magazine embarked on a unique path for a travel publication, let alone an in-flight magazine, with stories on the plight of Haiti, the controversy over federal funding of Southern plantations, and daily life in strife-torn Northern Ireland. Jim Shahin eventually took an opportunity to write a regular humor column for American Way Magazine and balanced this work with his duties as Senior Editor. From June 1993 to December 2008, Jim Shahin wrote a wide range of columns, many of which were reprinted and anthologized in mainstream newspapers and books.

In January 2001, Chile Pepper Magazine sought out Jim Shahin’s services as a lifestyle and food columnist, and Shahin wrote on spicy food for the next three years. On a freelance basis, Jim Shahin has published articles in Spin, GQ, Parenting, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and other newspapers and magazines of national significance. Jim Shahin has also taught graduate and undergraduate courses on magazine writing and editing at Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications. Jim Shahin lives in Washington, D.C.
