Holly Cole Holly ColeAs a jazz singer, Holly Cole likes to swim in the deep end of the pool.Shimmering with heartfelt conviction, it's just the latest example of how Cole can completely reshape a collection of familiar songs through her fearless disregard for the trappings of nostalgia. The moods of the season vary from cool to hot.Sometimes she covers a tune with the languid grace of a picnic blanket stretching across a warm patch of grass. But she's just as likely to give us a lingering look at summer's dark side. After a 14-year career that spans nine full-length albums, the singer's latest CD is part of a continuing quest to find material that makes an intimate connection.Local fans will get a chance to hear her modern take on some great old songs when she appears at the Orpheum next Sunday (June 29).In a recent phone interview, Cole stressed how much she was looking forward to performing in Vancouver."I got into this business because I love to perform live," she said."The Orpheum's such a wonderful place to sing and I think we've built up a bit of a rapport over the years.I've worked with the symphony there and everyone always makes me feel so warm and appreciated.I love that direct communication with an audience." Anyone who's seen Cole in concert knows that's where she's at her best. Her passion is fuelled by the fact that she has to feel strongly about a given song or it just doesn't work. | Holly Cole Featured acts include Cesaria Evora, Holly Cole, Wayne Shorter Quartet, Joshua Redman's Elastic Band, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Mike Stern Band with Alain Caron, John Scofield Band, Ottmar Liebert + Luna Negra, Amon Tobin, Little Feat, Cinematic Orchestra, K-OS, Zawinul Syndicate, Blonde Redhead, Mr. Scruff, and Orchestra Baobab.Featured acts include Cesaria Evora, Holly Cole, Wayne Shorter Quartet, Joshua Redman's Elastic Band, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Mike Stern Band with Alain Caron, John Scofield Band, Ottmar Liebert + Luna Negra, Amon Tobin, Little Feat, Cinematic Orchestra, K-OS, Zawinul Syndicate, Blonde Redhead, Mr. Scruff, and Orchestra Baobab. | Holly Cole | Holly Cole | Holly Cole | Holly Cole | Holly Cole Dixie Chicks JUST ANNOUNCED Swing Into Spring
